Concrete acid staining is a process that uses a mixture of water, hydrochloric acid, and acid-soluble metallic salts to create a chemical reaction with the concrete surface. This reaction produces unique, variegated color effects that penetrate the concrete, resulting in a permanent, long-lasting finish that won’t peel or fade like paint.
When properly applied and maintained, acid-stained concrete can last for decades. The color is permanent because it’s the result of a chemical reaction within the concrete itself. However, to maintain its appearance and protect it from wear, it’s recommended to apply a sealer every 2-3 years, depending on traffic and exposure.
Most concrete surfaces can be acid stained, but there are some exceptions. New concrete should cure for at least 28 days before staining. Concrete that has been previously sealed, painted, or covered with another coating may not accept the stain unless these treatments are removed.
